More than 4 million people in Germany take the opportunity presented by the annual European Heritage Day to visit historical monuments which are otherwise mostly closed. For several years now the German Foundation for Monument Protection has coordinated this important national cultural event. Almost 7,000 buildings and sites invite enthusiasts to travel back in time on the second Sunday in September.
For one day visitors can experience monument protection "live" in all regions of Germany: peek over the shoulders of restorers, explore archaeological excavation sites, marvel at the otherwise closed cellar-vault of a castle, and a lot more. At many places special tours, demonstrations and a varied support programme await visitors.
The European Heritage Day not only offers a forum for professionals involved in monument protection and preservation to present their working fields and promote the cause of monument protection. The annual event also provides many private owners, honorary workers and committed associations devoting their energies to preserving historical buildings and sites with an opportunity to present their activities and achievements to a broad public.

The European Heritage Day in Germany is part of the European Heritage Days, which stand under the patronage of the European Council and are meanwhile held in all European countries in September.
